Mindy Kaling is finally speaking out about her experience on Meghan Markle’s Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, after their on-screen interaction sparked debate online. The Mindy Project creator, who appeared in the second episode of the show, revealed that she thoroughly enjoyed her time with the Duchess of Sussex despite the controversy surrounding certain moments in their exchange.
“I loved my time with Meghan,” Kaling said during an interview on The View on March 6. “I had a great time.”
The episode, which premiered on March 4, quickly gained attention on social media, particularly a moment when Kaling referred to Markle by her maiden name. The Duchess of Sussex corrected her, explaining that she now identifies as “Sussex” since it represents her family name.
Meghan Markle’s Netflix Show Sparks Debate
While Markle’s Netflix series made it to No. 6 on the platform’s “Top 10 Shows in the U.S. Today,” some viewers found her response to Kaling’s comment unnecessary. Social media users questioned why Markle insisted on using Sussex as a last name, pointing out that it is a title, not a surname.
Critics also dissected another interaction in which Markle seemingly mocked Kaling’s pronunciation of the word “look.” The exchange led to online discussions about Markle’s tone and whether the moment was playful or condescending.
Despite the online chatter, Kaling dismissed the negativity and instead highlighted Markle’s hospitality. She recalled how Markle invited her to film the episode shortly after she gave birth to her third child.
“I was on maternity leave when Meghan texted me about the show. She said she was cooking for friends and invited me to Montecito. I wanted to get taken care of at that moment in my life, so it was the perfect opportunity,” Kaling shared.
Mindy Kaling Defends Meghan Markle
Addressing misconceptions about Markle’s personality, Kaling described her as generous and down-to-earth. She said Markle prepared a thoughtful gift basket for her filled with fresh produce, homemade jam, and hot sauce after filming wrapped.
“She knew I loved hot sauce, so she included some in the basket,” Kaling noted. “She’s a very generous woman who knew I needed a break.”
Markle has not directly addressed the criticism surrounding her interaction with Kaling but took to Instagram to thank fans for supporting her show.
“For more recipes, fun, and reasons to ‘Mmmm,’ check out the show — which in just 24 hours is already in the Top 10!” Markle wrote.
Despite the divided opinions, With Love, Meghan continues to attract viewers, solidifying the Duchess of Sussex’s presence in the entertainment industry.
