Actress Mara Wilson penned a moving essay reflecting on her friendship with Michelle Trachtenberg, describing the late star’s struggles with bullying and the shock of her sudden passing.
Wilson, best known for her role in Matilda, shared the heartfelt piece on Tuesday, revealing that she and Trachtenberg, who died in February at age 39, had attended the same middle school in Burbank, California.
Michelle Trachtenberg’s Painful Experience With Bullying
Wilson recalled how Trachtenberg was often the target of relentless bullying from classmates, who gave her cruel nicknames based on her 1996 film Harriet the Spy. The insults, she said, were relentless and deeply affected her friend.
Wilson remembered a moment when Trachtenberg, usually composed and confident, broke down in tears. She said her friend felt helpless, unable to change how others saw her, no matter what she did.
The Mrs. Doubtfire actress also reflected on how Trachtenberg had been there for her during difficult times, particularly after Wilson’s mother passed away in 1996.
Wilson Reacts to Trachtenberg’s Sudden Death
Wilson shared that she was packing for a work trip when she learned of Trachtenberg’s passing. She described the moment as overwhelming, saying her hands shook, her knees went weak, and she felt like she might faint.
She wrote that Trachtenberg was too young to die and had worked too hard to get where she was. Wilson had always assumed they would reconnect one day, giving her a chance to tell Trachtenberg how much she admired her.
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer star’s cause of death was ruled “undetermined” after her family objected to an autopsy. However, reports revealed that Trachtenberg had suffered from several health issues, including back pain and bone problems, and had undergone liver surgery before her death.
Despite these struggles, sources said she remained strong and never let her health problems define her.
Hollywood Mourns the Loss of Michelle Trachtenberg
Following the news of Trachtenberg’s passing, tributes poured in from her former co-stars. Sarah Michelle Gellar, Blake Lively, and David Boreanaz were among those who honored her on social media.
Wilson, who previously expressed her heartbreak in an Instagram post, used her essay to remember Trachtenberg not just as a talented actress, but as a friend who endured more than most people knew.
“She was one of the coolest people I ever knew,” Wilson wrote. “The time we spent together as kids was some of the best of my life.”
