Tesla recalled nearly 380,000 vehicles on Friday following reports of power steering assist failure that could compromise safety at low speeds, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall follows a year-long investigation and earlier warranty claims, with the company issuing an over-the-air software update to enhance safety.
On Friday, Tesla announced the recall of roughly 380,000 vehicles in the US owing to a power steering assist failure. This failure could boost steering effort, especially at low speeds, which could raise the likelihood of a crash.
After an investigation that lasted over a year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a recall for Tesla vehicles after some owners reported problems with the steering. Some owners said they couldn’t spin the wheel at all, while others said they had to exert more effort than usual. According to the NHTSA, over 50 vehicles were reportedly towed because of the problem last year.
Tens of thousands of owners have experienced premature breakdowns of suspension or steering parts since 2016, according to a report that was published by Reuters in late 2023. The article used Tesla documentation as well as interviews with consumers and former workers.
Some 2023 Model 3 sedans and Model Y crossovers with older software may experience an overvoltage breakdown, which could cause motor drive components on the printed circuit board to be overstressed, according to a filing with NHTSA.
According to Tesla, the steering is unaffected, and a visual alarm is generated if an overstressing condition occurs while the vehicle is in motion. However, the steering assist can not work after the car stops and won’t work again even when the car starts moving again.
As of the 10th of January, 3,012 warranty claims have been discovered by Tesla as being connected to or potentially related to the fault. No accidents or fatalities associated with the disease have been reported.
It claimed that an over-the-air software update had been deployed by the firm to solve the issue.
Following the recall of around 239,000 vehicles in January due to malfunctioning rear-view cameras, this recall is the second significant recall that the carmaker has issued with regard to automobiles in 2018.
During premarket trading in the United States, Tesla shares experienced a small decline. After a good year in 2024, the stock has had a fall of approximately 10% this year.
