Grand Theft Auto VI is set to launch this fall exclusively on next-generation consoles, omitting a PC release at launch. Take-Two’s CEO indicated that skipping the PC platform could forfeit over 40 percent of total sales, a move aimed at reinvigorating console sales amid a challenging market environment, analysts say.
According to Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, in the event that Grand Theft Auto VI does not launch on the PC, it might result in sales of more than forty percent.
Speaking with IGN ahead of the publisher’s recent financial results about the game skipping PC at launch, Zelnick essentially said that the highly-anticipated game would unsurprisingly eventually release on PC, highlighting that, historically, Rockstar has started with some platforms before moving on to others, so even a game as anticipated as the next entry in the popular series is not going to break this trend.
In spite of this, personal computer sales account for a significant portion of total sales for virtually every multiplatform game. This will not be any different for Grand Theft Auto VI, as the CEO of Take-Two has stated that the personal computer version of any multiplatform game has the potential to generate more than 40% of total earnings.
Zelnick believes that this is going to happen this year with the release of not only Grand Theft Auto VI but also other games, even in the United States, despite the fact that tariffs are not making things any easier. On the other hand, launching on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S only is likely to stimulate console sales and pull them out of the current slump.
In the fall of this year, Grand Theft Auto VI will be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles all around the world. However, the expansive nature of the game may result in a delay, which would not be the first time that Rockstar Games has experienced such a delay.
Despite mixed reactions to skipping PC release and risking over 40% of potential revenue, GTA VI’s exclusive launch on next-generation consoles highlights Take-Two’s strategic pivot to revitalize console sales amid a competitive market.
In its Q3 report, Take-Two confirmed GTA VI’s Fall debut alongside remarkably exciting plans for Nintendo Switch 2 support and additional industry-leading blockbuster titles. This robust release slate promises a record-setting year, seamlessly bridging console focus with multi-platform expansion to redefine and elevate gaming experiences worldwide.
