Building on President Trump’s deportation effort, the Trump administration launched a new app on Monday that will let undocumented individuals to “self deport” instead of facing potential arrest and incarceration, Reuters reports.
The CBP Home app, developed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, will have a feature that allows users to indicate their “intent to depart,” according to the agency.
Statement from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem states that the CBP Home app allows aliens to self-deport and leave the country immediately, giving them a chance to return legally and pursue the American dream.
Going on to say, “if they don’t, we will find them, we will deport them, and they will never return.”
The Republican Trump has promised to deport an unprecedented influx of illegal immigrants to the United States. Although Democratic Vice President Joe Biden deported a large number of people who had crossed the border illegally in the past, Trump’s deportation figures were lower than the average monthly total for fiscal year 2024.
The administration of President Trump has taken additional actions that could put pressure on immigrants who are currently living in the United States illegally to leave the country.
Without proper federal registration, individuals without legal status would be subject to fines or jail time under a rule enacted by the Trump administration and scheduled to take effect on April 11.
The former CBP One app, introduced during Biden’s administration, has been superseded by CBP Home. Around one million Mexican migrants were able to make an appointment to request entrance at a legitimate border crossing using the Biden-era app.
Republicans voiced their disapproval of the Biden program, arguing that it made it easier for large numbers of people to enter the United States and that it did not conduct sufficient background checks on immigrants.
After Trump’s shutdown, CBP was reopened. Migrants with scheduled appointments were left stranded and uncertain of what to do just one hour after entering office.
