A new report has revealed that even GOP lawmakers are taken aback by former President Donald Trump’s latest policy proposals, which range from turning the Gaza Strip into a luxury resort to seizing Greenland through military force. While Democrats have publicly condemned these ideas as extreme and unworkable, Republicans have reportedly responded with shock, confusion, and an underlying fear of political retaliation.

Republicans Caught Off Guard

According to the Washington Post, many Republican lawmakers first react to Trump’s proposals with disbelief before scrambling to decipher his true intentions. Trump, who often unveils his ideas through social media or offhand remarks, has left congressional staff rushing to clarify his positions.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) appeared unsure when asked about Trump’s plan to transform Gaza, responding that it might simply be a “conversation starter.” However, history has shown that once Trump proposes an idea—no matter how unexpected—his party eventually rallies behind it.

This pattern has already played out with past proposals, including Trump’s statements on reclaiming Greenland and the Panama Canal. Initially dismissed as far-fetched, these ideas soon gained traction among Republicans, culminating in the introduction of the Panama Canal Repurchase Act of 2025 and a bill dubbed Make Greenland Great Again.

Fear of Retaliation Keeps GOP in Line

While some Republicans may have private reservations, few dare to oppose Trump publicly. According to The Washington Post, GOP lawmakers are acutely aware that speaking out against the former president could result in severe political consequences.

Trump’s influence over the party remains strong, and his ability to target critics through social media or campaign endorsements has created a climate of fear. Lawmakers who fail to support his agenda risk facing primary challenges from Trump-backed candidates or losing favor with his base.

As a result, many Republicans, even those who are initially hesitant, ultimately align themselves with Trump’s proposals to avoid political retribution.
