Bill Gates, the Microsoft co-founder and one of the world’s richest men, has finally opened up about the one decision he deeply regrets—his divorce from Melinda French Gates. Despite his estimated $128 billion fortune, the tech mogul revealed that money couldn’t undo the pain caused by the end of his 27-year marriage.
Gates Reflects on His Divorce and Personal Failures
Gates, 69, recently admitted that his split from Melinda in 2021 remains his biggest regret. The couple, who tied the knot in 1994 and raised three children together, shocked the world with their announcement to end their marriage.
“I certainly made mistakes, and I take responsibility,” Gates said. “I don’t think delving into the particulars at this point is constructive, but yes, I caused pain, and I feel terrible about that.”
While he remained vague about the specifics, speculation continues to swirl regarding the reasons behind their separation. Rumors of an alleged extramarital affair with a former Microsoft employee and his controversial ties to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have repeatedly resurfaced.
Melinda Gates Condemns Epstein Connection
Melinda Gates has not been shy about expressing her disapproval of her ex-husband’s past meetings with Epstein, the disgraced financier who was accused of trafficking underage girls before his reported suicide in 2019.
“I did not like that he had meetings with Jeffrey Epstein, no. I made that clear to him,” she said. “He was abhorrent. He was evil personified.”
Gates has denied any wrongdoing but acknowledged that associating with Epstein was a mistake. The billionaire has repeatedly stated that his meetings with Epstein were solely related to philanthropy.
Moving On: New Relationships for Both Gates and Melinda
Despite the public scrutiny, both Bill and Melinda have moved on romantically. Gates has been linked to Paula Hurd, the widow of former Oracle CEO Mark Hurd. Meanwhile, Melinda is reportedly dating entrepreneur Philip Vaughn.
Although their marriage ended, the former couple continues to work together on their foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which remains one of the largest philanthropic organizations in the world.
For Gates, however, the wounds from his past remain fresh. His admission of regret highlights the personal challenges he has faced despite his professional success.
