Apple’s first foldable device, a MacBook-iPad hybrid with an 18.8-inch display, will run macOS instead of iPadOS, analyst Jeff Pu reports. Slated for mass production in late 2026, this shift could reshape Apple’s product strategy, sidelining iPadOS for its larger foldable design.

The debut might happen either around the end of 2026 or in the first half of 2027, according to recent reports, since the company’s first two foldable smartphones will go into mass production in the second half of next year.

The latest research notes from GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu assert that Apple’s foldable gadget would be powered by macOS (according to MacRumors). The larger folding gadget, which is said to be a cross between a MacBook and an iPad, would have a screen size of 18.8 inches.

Prior to today, it was not apparent what operating system the gadget would be capable of running, and Pu’s assertions are extremely audacious in this regard because they only refer to the existence of the MacBook.

According to Mark Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter, new hardware designs, such as “foldable devices and touch-screen Macs,” will be enabled by Apple’s impending iOS 19 and macOS 16. Having said that, there have been no rumors suggesting a 2019 introduction for the Mac with a touch screen.

The macOS rumor about a foldable gadget might have its roots in a piece from The Wall Street Journal, which analyst Jeff Pu claimed as the source of his information on foldable devices.

In addition to this, Pu says that the foldable iPhone will have an internal display of 7.8 inches. The analyst refrained from providing any further information regarding the item or its availability, WCCFTECH shares.

Apple has consistently maintained a wall between the iPad Pro and the MacBook despite users’ longing for macOS on the iPad. Since the iPad now offers desktop-class performance and raw power, the demands are somewhat notable.

For the time being, the concept appears to be quite realistic; nonetheless, it is still difficult to determine whether or not the story contains any substance.
